Welcome to 2019

Welcome to 2019

Welcome to 2019, the Commercial Finance Association’s 75th anniversary year. I couldn’t be more optimistic about what lies ahead. A new brand, valuable resources delivered through a revamped website, key industry data, and more is on the horizon.

New Brand and Enhanced User Experience
As announced at the Annual Convention this past November, we’ll soon be known as the Secured Finance Network. Our new name and visual identity respects our heritage, while at the same time, better reflects the dynamic and diverse community we are today. In name and in substance we will be more inclusive and relevant, anticipating and responding to the needs of our multifaceted community: international, regional, and community banks; entrepreneurial firms; allied service providers and influencers; and the varied individuals––from young professionals to seasoned executives—who move our industry forward. Our strength is directly drawn from the talent, commitment, and energy of our members.

To keep our network informed and connected, we are completely overhauling the cfa.com website. By this summer, we will launch a new site under our new brand. With improved back-end functionality, better navigation, and curated content, the upgraded website will be a hub of information and resources for the companies and individuals who put capital to work every day.

Expanded Resources
In 2018, we gathered valuable data on the secured finance industry to inform our Market Sizing & Impact Study. The CFA Foundation, in conjunction with Ernst & Young, is putting the finishing touches on this groundbreaking report. Members get an early preview, so keep an eye out for it. And please consider participating in our ongoing Westat quarterly data studies.

We have been ramping up our advocacy efforts to support our member interests on impactful issues including proposed federal legislation on bankruptcy reform and customer/client disclosure requirements at the state level.  The association has also significantly invested in our education programming. We’re updating the curriculum and exploring different formats and delivery options that better align with our member’s busy lives. If you are interested in getting more involved in advocacy, teaching a class, or would like to be involved in developing course content, please let us know.

New Business Opportunities
Some insight-rich events are right around the corner that provide great venues to connect with your peers and set the stage for new opportunities. First up is the Asset-Based Capital Conference (ABCC) on February 5th & 6th in Las Vegas. Again this year, we are bringing together thought leaders and industry veterans who participate in the asset-based markets and partnering with TMA on a joint closing reception. Following ABCC is the Future of FinTech Innovation Summit and the Women in Commercial Finance Conference on March 13th and 14th in NYC (on the same day as the National Jewish Health Financial Services Dinner). We’ve reformatted our FinTech agenda to focus on what we can expect our industry to look like in the next 3 to 5 years and added a prominent futurist as our speaker.

Based on the success of our RoundTable Breakfasts and Town Hall Economist Meeting at last year’s convention, we’ve added a new similarly formatted half-day IdeaCon on June 18th in New York City.  Finally, don’t forget to mark your calendar for the 2019 Annual Convention also taking place in New York in November. We have a lot in store for our 75th celebration that you won’t want to miss. If you have any old photos or other memorabilia from the past 75 years, we would love to see it. Please send me or Debbie Battaglia a copy at dbattaglia@cfa.com.

My best wishes for a happy and prosperous new year.

Warm regards,

Richard D. Gumbrecht
